Global Health Forum

The Melbourne Children’s Global Health Forum is a monthly update on topics of interest in global child and adolescent health. The Global Health Forum is held at the Melbourne Children’s Campus, The Royal Children’s Hospital and is open to all interested in global health on the campus, and from the broader global health community. University students

We offer placement and research opportunities through The University of Melbourne, the MCGH is able to offer these research opportunities to students enrolled in relevant degrees at the University of Melbourne.

Doctor of Medicine Research Project (MDRP)

Students enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Melbourne are able to complete their MD Research Project requirement through the Department of Paediatrics, based at the Melbourne Children’s campus. Students will spend the 3rd and 4th year of their degrees carrying out global child health research, supervised by leading paediatric researchers.

Research areas may include: pneumococcal disease, tropical and infectious diseases, and biomedical research. Research projects in global child health will be advertised to students through the Department.

Eligibility

Students must be enrolled in the Doctor of Medicine (MD) at The University of Melbourne. For up to date requirements please refer to the Melbourne Medical School.

Global Health Fellowship

The Global Health Fellowship is an opportunity to undertake research in a priority area for Melbourne Children’s Global Health. A number of research projects will be

This position may be accredited in accordance with training requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (or equivalent).

Duration: 12 months FTE

Eligibility

  • Tertiary qualification in MBBS or related discipline, plus an appropriate level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation
  • Completed basic training in Paediatrics (FRACP or equivalent)
  • Medical registration in Australia (or eligible for medical registration in Australia)

This position is available in 2019, 2020 and 2021 through the support of The Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Laos Clinical Education Fellowship

The Laos Clinical Education Fellow will work with the Education Development Centre, University of Health Sciences, Lao PDR, by providing technical support to the development of medical education activities, assessment methods and educational resources. The Fellow will undertake teaching ward rounds and activities at three teaching hospitals – Mahosot Hospital, the National Children’s Hospital and Setthathirath Hospital – and contribute to ongoing development of clinical education capacity.  They will provide technical support to Lao paediatricians delivering continuing education activities in Lao hospitals including central, provincial and district hospitals.

Duration: 6-12 months FTE

Eligibility

These position is offered yearly through a partnership with the University of Health Science, Lao PDR and Laos Paediatricians, and the support of the Planet Wheeler Foundation and the Australian Government’s Australian Volunteers for International Development Program.

Solomon Islands Senior Paediatric Registrar

Paediatric registrar role in Honiara in the Paediatric Department at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

The paediatric registrar will coordinate, supervise, and train Solomon Islands doctors who have completed undergraduate medical training in Cuba, a clinical bridging course, and are now undertaking a 2 year internship.

Duration: 6-12 months FTE

Eligibility

  • Completed basic training in Paediatrics (FRACP or equivalent), with at least 6 months of neonatology.

This position may be accredited in accordance with training requirements of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (or equivalent).

This position is offered yearly through in partnership with the Australian Government’s Australian Volunteers for International Development Program.

 

Public Health Medicine Fellows and trainees

Victorian Public Health Medicine Trainee Scheme (VPHMT scheme):

  • Led by University of Melbourne and member organisations – The Melbourne School of Population and Global Health (MSPGH), The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute), The Burnet Institute (Burnet), The Alfred Hospital (Alfred) and the Melbourne Children’s Campus (Melbourne Children’s Global Health and the Centre for Community Child Health).
  • All five parties are nationally and internationally recognised centers of excellence in public health workforce development and policy-relevant research. A jointly administered program will give trainees a second-to-none understanding of public health, drawing on the strengths of all five organisations.
  • Trainees will benefit from the experience of public health physicians, other physicians with expertise in infectious diseases and internal medicine, epidemiologists, economists, demographers, social scientists and health service researchers. The institutions themselves will benefit from the highly skilled workforce and enthusiasm brought by trainees to the workplace. As one example, the trainees will be integral in joining the clinical and project staff at the newly formed Alfred-Burnet Public Health Group and will help develop this unique unit into an innovative group straddling hospital services and population health impact.
    Their expertise spans the breadth of public health competencies across applications to health promotion, non-communicable disease (NCD, including cancer and mental health issues) and communicable disease. Trainees will benefit from access to supervisors with depth of expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics and health economics, health program evaluation, health policy analysis, Indigenous health, women’s health, child public health, international health, healthy cities and communities, and more.
